A dial bore gauge is one of the most accurate tools for measuring a cylindrical bore or for checking a bore for out-of-roundness or taper. A dial bore gauge does not provide a direct measurement. It indicates the amount of deviation from a preset size or dimension of one bore to another. A dial bore gauge must be preset to a known standard. A typical known standard would be a micrometer, caliper or master ring gage. For absolute precision a certified insulated hardened and ground master ring gage provides superior accuracy. If a ring gage is not available an outside micrometer will provide satisfactory results.
